Resources to consider as you take your next step.

No one is called to journey alone. On my journey of healing, I found it helpful to seek professional supports along the way in the form of counselling, inner healing, coaching, and a lot of ongoing self-help to support my well-being.

Counsellors and coaches offer a safe space to be listened to and heard; they are neutral, non-judgemental and supportive. Yet their roles are very different. Consider these questions when asking yourself what supports you might need to take your next step.

Consider the supports a coach if you answer “yes” to these questions:

  • Is my goal self-development? Life design?

  • Do I need support to focus on the present, the future and moving forward?

  • Do I need support to unlock my potential? Clarify my vision?

  • Do I want help to identify my values and specific obstacles getting in my way?

  • Do I believe I have all the answers within me?

  • Do I need to focus on the “how”?

  • Do I need strategies to help with the logistics of a behaviour?

  • Do I want to work on task-oriented goals and actions?

Consider the supports of a counsellor/therapist if you answer “yes” to these questions:

  • Is my goal healing? Issue resolution?

  • Do I need support to process my present and my past?

  • Do I need support treating a mental health condition?

  • Do I need support unpacking my family history, previous relationships, historical reasons for patterns of unhelpful behaviour?

  • Do I need a trained healthcare professional to provide advice and suggestions?

  • Do I need to focus on the “why”?

  • Do I need strategies to help with the emotions behind a behaviour?

  • Do I want to work on emotion-oriented goals?

Coaching

Coaching can be a wonderful source of support on your journey. A coach walks alongside you, never pushing you, never pulling you. Coaches believe in your resourcefulness.
